The Mega Earthquake if occurs in the valley may lead to unpredicted disaster. It has been estimated that during such quake, there may occur approximately 60,000 deaths, 1,00,000 injuries and 7,00,000 or more rendered homeless. About 80% of the building will be severely damaged and 60% of the bridges will collapse, Road access to the valley will be cut off for weeks to months due to landslide. The most densely populated core area of the cities with narrow streets may become inaccessible for weeks after quake. The political, social, and economical environment of the valley changes whenever there is disbalance in the supply of food, petroleum products and other goods. Can you imagine the situation of the valley, if this supply stops for months????
“Australian-Indian plate” gets “Subducted” under “Eurasian plate” causing accumulation of strain energy of rock. As the strain exceeds its capacity, then rupture occurs and huge amount of energy dissipates in the form of “Seismic Waves”. It propagates through different medium inside earth and reach to surface of the earth causing vibration of ground.
The major “mega Earthquake” in the history occur near to the plate boundaries. So Nepal is considered as “Highway Seismically Vulnerable Area”. Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, is again more vulnerable to earthquake, due to the nature of the soil deposited in the valley. From the geological investigation the “sediments” deposited in the valley varies from few meters to 600 m. As the thickness of “sediments” increases, the action of “Local soil amplification Effect” will increase which may finally lead to “liquation” phenomena destroying and collapsing buildings and structures.
